Introducing: Patrick Tejada

Welcome back to our get-together TCG! Today, it’s my turn say Hello. Thanks to the merciful imagery on my card (thank you, Chantal!), you won’t be able to tell that I’m the eldest Carrot. But since I’m working as a developer for only 3,5 years, I consider myself the youngest team member, in terms of work-years. For more trivia I invite you to follow the lines below.

Who are you and what do you do at Chasing Carrots?
Hi. I’m Patrick (the 2nd), carrot of all trades. I’m involved in game and level design, do most of the writing, and recently, sound design. Aside of that I tend for QA and our community affairs.

What is the best about being a game developer?
Tynan Sylvester referred to creating games as ‘engineering experiences’. That sums it up. For me, developing a game has an almost physical touch to it. It’s like building a space ship with your team. Some work on the engines, some on the controls, others on the hull. One day it lifts off and takes people on a journey. It’s amazing to be a part of that process, and journey.

What did you do before Chasing Carrots?
I was working in advertising for almost 10 years when I realized, I need to earn my living with something I can deeply identify with. I always loved playing games, and the rise of the indies intensified this connection. Well, and after I met the Carrots at a game jam (go to jams, folks!), I decided to dare a personal reboot.

What kind of games do you like?
I’m pretty open, genres-wise, but the games I’ve enjoyed most came from the indie scene. I like titles that have a special touch, a strong core and story. Games that are true to themselves, so to speak. The Talos Principle, Papo y Yo, The Fall, Sword & Sworcery EP, Anodyne or The Dream Machine are examples, that resonated for a quite a while.

My first gaming device was…
…an Amiga 500 which I got for my 10th birthday, along with a box full of *cough*copied games. This was such an unforgettable moment full of wonder. Whenever I remember it, I imagine angels playing trumpets in the background.

What would you say, is your nerdiest apparel?
My small collection of classic game devices, amongst which are a C64, an Atari 2600, and the obligatory Mega Drive and a SuperNES. The most modern console I own is a Playstation 2. Consider this a statement.

If you could be a game character, you would be…?
Hm. The guy in The Proposterous Awesomeness Of Everything, I suppose.

Hello everyone! The waiting comes to an end, today we introduce Patrick W., Über-Carrot, Conqueror of the Andes and conjurer of heavy metal demons. This card is a real treat for your deck, since it greatly increases mobility on rough terrain and spices  everything up with a special blend of madness. As always, please find a more extended self-reflection below.

Who are you and what do you do at Chasing Carrots?
Hi there, my name is Patrick(1), one of the co-founders here at chasing carrots. My background is in 3d animation and filmmaking which i studied at the filmakademie badenwürttemberg before working for a media production company. There I met Dominik and together we (re-)discovered our passion for creating games. At chasing carrots my main responsibility is art, ui and having weird ideas.

How and why did you become a game developer?
For me, it’s all about creating worlds. I love to envision worlds, characters and contraptions with which players can interact.

What was your first gaming experience?
It was a really strange U.F.O. game on an atari 2600 which kept me playing for days and days.I don’t remember the title, neither what even the goal of the game was. I think what intrigued me the most, was the pure experience of feedback from input controller to screen. Then the era of Commodores began: A C64 and an Amiga500 at friends house…with dozens and dozens of “backup copies” of truly amazing games. Gaming heaven with loading times from hell provided by the lovely “Datasette”. Finally, starting with a 286dx, i joined the (at this moment not so) glorious “pc master-race”. My very first own rig pc was a blazingly fast 486 with 33Mhz on which learned 3d and coding in turbo pascal.

What are your all-time favorite games?
Diablo. All of them! I love the dense, atmospheric settings and these shiny layers of polish Blizzard packs on all their games. Oh, and: LOOT!

Who or what is your favorite band/music?
Music is essential to me. Metal, Alternative, Indie, Blues, Progressive Rock. I listen to everything that sparks any kind of emotions…or opens up a mosh pit.

What’s your craziest hobby?
I wouldn’t call it crazy but i really like to do long distant hikes.Walking, eating, sleeping, gazing at nature’s wonders and only having the bare essentials with me provides me with this expansive feeling of easiness and the more basic aspects of life. Like shitting in the woods

Dear Readers, it is time for another introduction of a Chasing Carrots team-member. Please meet Paul, our trusted and talented freelancer, who has been working with us for quite a while now, to bring Pressure Overdrive to life. Be sure to collect this card and memorize his stats – Paul is a great move to play out into the game! As before, we gathered some first-hand details in a short interview. And should you want to know even more about how Paul ticks, be sure to stop by at his website.

Who are you and what do you do at Chasing Carrots?
Hi, I’m Paul. For the most part I am a coder and game designer. But I like to poke around in other desciplines related to game development. Currently I’m a freelance employee at Chasing Carrots. Since I work here for more than two years, I feel like I’m part of the family and I hope I can continue this great relationship with one of the best teams I’ve ever had the chance to work with.

What was your first gaming experience?
I remember playing Burger Time on an Atari 2600 when my family and I arrived in Germany in the late 80s. The first games my brother and I ever owned were on the NES: Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda.

How and why did you become a game developer?
I wanted to make games since my childhood. I was fascinated by games as a kid and the next better thing to playing games, I imagined back then, was to actually make games and see others playing them. I still kind of feel that way. Becoming a game developer somehow made it harder for me to enjoy games, even good ones. But seeing the reactions of people playing one of my games totally makes up for it. I started modding Half-Life in my teens. I was more on the arts side of game development (3D-modelling, texturing, animation, level design). The teams I worked in always lacked proper coders. I figured, if I learned how to code I could do everything myself. So I enrolled for computer engineering at my neares university. After several enineering jobs I returned to games and here I am.

Who or what is your favorite band/music?

What are your all-time favorite games?
Dark Souls, Super Metroid, and Kerbal Space Program, in that order.

What would you say, is your nerdiest apparel?
I have a mechanical keyboard with my most commonly used GNU/Emacs key chords printed across the entire layout.

Improving one’s skills through practice is important, and there are several valid ways to do so. Our 3D-artist Daniel chose a quite tasty approach. With the warm season approaching, he created a cocktail he would love to serve to people, if he was a bartender. So lean back, relax and have a cooled glass of “AcidFizz’86”. Its main ingredients? Fresh fruits, 3D Studio Max, V-Ray and around 35 hours of spare time. With this level of detail, you can almost taste it on your tongue, right?

Goodbye Christopher! Hello Benno!

After six months of being a highly skilled support for our code devision, Christopher’s internship finally is over and he’s heading back to Flensburg to focus on his Bachlor-Thesis. It’s been a great time and we wish Christopher all the best – not only for his studies, but also for his wedding!

As sad it is to say goodbye to Christopher, we are happy to welcome his successor, Benno! He will help us get Pressure Overdrive out into the world, soon, and then return with us to Heart Of Scrap. So, a big Welcome from all of us. We’re looking to have a really orange time with you! 😉

You might be curious about Benno, so we’ve put some information about him on a neat Collectible Carrot Card. Who are you and what do you do at Chasing Carrots?
Hi, my name is Benno Graze I’m 21 years old and doing an internship as coder at Chasing Carrots. The internship is part of my media informatics studies.

What kind of games do you like and what are your favorite games?
I’m a huge fan of the Mass Effect series, even if I don’t play a lot of singleplayer games. I like oldschool Real Time Strategy Games like Age of Empires Series or Empire Earth 1 but I’m also looking forward to the new Dawn of War III. Competitive or Cooperative Survival Games like Rust or The Forest are also pretty fun. Overall I play a lot of very different games from Arma III over Emergency 5 to Dead Space. An important Part for me is, that I can play the game together with friends or other random players. Generally I’d say that I prefer Science Fiction oriented games but that depends.

What was your first gaming experience?
Either it was the Gameboy Color or some PC games for kids. My first “real game” for PC was The Sims 2 in which I spend a huge amount of time, even years later.

What is your craziest hobby?
I’m a volunteer firefighter which takes a lot of time cause of training, events and responds. I’m also involved in our junior fire department as assistant advisor and so I do a lot of planning, keeping our website up-to-date or organizing some trips, events meetings or training sessions. Overall it’s a great hobby for me cause it’s completely different to my work, studies or other freetime activities. It’s also a great thing that you can help your community by being a firefighter.

After a shy start, Freespawn is back with another three games that caught my attention. This time I only focused on, since there’s so much good stuff to find. This neat jam-game by Farmergnome has everything to either wave you away for a couple minutes at lunchbreak, or let up to four players on the couch surf together for an hour or two. Once you got the feel of the simple mechanic, it’s just swell. Surf Shogun has a flow of its own. Take it on, and don’t let the Surf Ninjas rule the world! Get it here.



From the Steam Page: The world’s only RPG roguelike action stealth shooter brawler co-op megagame. It’s like Nuclear Throne meets Deus Ex. That nail’s it. Streets of Rogue is really clever, deep, and has a nice sense of humor. This is the free alpha, featuring character classes like Comedian, Ninja or Werewolf, a procedurally generated city, and a 2-player mode. Don’t miss it.



In less than 10 days chkkll created this sandy jump’n’dash for the GBjam. While it treats your eyes and ears (if you are into that style), it can and will hurt your fingers. Ottopunk is not easy. It’s like Sindbad on speed. You will die often, but at least you get to spawn at that disco dude’s tent. He’s cool. See yourself.

As of late, I’ve discovered a special interest in free games. Not ‘free to play’, but free as in ‘created just for the sake of it’. I think such games have a different quality to them. Like a footprint. No external motivation, other than the itch to experiment, to share a thought, or for the mere fun of it. Another thing is: most of free games are rather short. You can easily enjoy them in one session, which is good for people like me. My attention span and/or time management tends to be jumpy.

There are a lot of great free games out there, and I’m just about to start digging deeper. Since I’d like to share what I find, feel free to follow this new and exclusive Carrotflix Series (with undefined frequency, plus a name that may change (since names are very important to me)).

Is this a game? You just walk around. But it’s worth playing, since there are quite a bunch of curious moments and scenes to encounter in BERNBAND:
